Insulated Glass Unit Measurement Guide: Glass Thickness, Air Space, Coatings, and Tolerances

Insulated glass measurement means identifying the thickness of each pane, the air space, the overall unit, and the coatings in a sealed insulated glass unit (IGU). This guide explains the parts of an IGU, how each is measured, how ASTM tolerances affect the numbers you see, and how a glass thickness gauge fits into the process.

Key Facts at a Glance

•         An IGU is a sealed assembly of two or more panes separated by an air space, so a full measurement has several values, not one.

•         Surfaces are numbered from the outside: in a double-pane unit, surface 1 is the outside face of the outer pane, 2 and 3 face the air space, and 4 is the room-side face of the inner pane.

•         Nominal glass sizes carry tolerances. ASTM C1036 sets the allowed thickness range, and ASTM E2190 states that glass thickness tolerance in an IGU follows C1036.

•         Overall unit thickness varies because glass, spacer, and any interlayers each have their own tolerance.

•         EDTM’s Glass-Chek PRO detects Low-E coatings and identifies hard coat or soft coat, with single, double, or triple silver for soft coat.

•         Thickness measurement does not report gas fill; gas content is a separate test.

Reading Surface Numbers

Surfaces are counted from the outside of the building. On a double-pane unit: surface 1 is the outside face of the outer pane, surface 2 is the air-space face of the outer pane, surface 3 is the air-space face of the inner pane, and surface 4 is the room-side face of the inner pane. A Low-E coating can sit on different surfaces depending on the design, so recording the surface is part of a complete measurement.

Measuring Glass Thickness in an IGU

A meter that reads through a sealed unit reports the thickness of each pane. The Glass-Chek PRO does this for double and triple pane windows in a single push, with an approximate range of 2 inches, and works with residential and commercial glass.

Why nominal and measured values differ

ASTM C1036 treats nominal thickness as a designation with a tolerance band. Public summaries of C1036 list minimums such as 0.115 in. for 1/8 in. glass, 0.220 in. for 1/4 in. glass, 0.345 in. for 3/8 in. glass, and 0.469 in. for 1/2 in. glass. A manufacturer’s quality standard citing the same specification gives a 3 mm range of 2.92 to 3.40 mm and a 6 mm minimum of 5.56 mm. Always check the current edition of the standard for the full table.

Nominal size

Published minimum or range (ASTM C1036 as reproduced in public references)

3 mm (1/8 in.)

2.92 mm to 3.40 mm; minimum 0.115 in.

6 mm (1/4 in.)

Minimum 5.56 mm (0.22 in.)

3/8 in.

Minimum 0.345 in.

1/2 in.

Minimum 0.469 in.

Practical consequence: a measured value that is a little off the nominal size is normal. A reading of 5.7 mm on a lite specified as 6 mm, for example, would not by itself indicate a problem, because the C1036 minimum for that size is 5.56 mm.

Measuring Air Space

The Glass-Chek PRO and ELITE report air space thickness alongside glass and overall thickness, from outside the sealed unit. ASTM E2190’s text references an airspace tolerance of plus or minus 0.8 mm in its requirements for test units; read the standard to see how it applies to your situation. A triple pane unit has two air spaces, and both appear in a single push. For a focused guide, see how to measure air space in an IGU without disassembling it.

Overall Unit Thickness and Tolerance

Overall thickness is the sum of the components, and each component has its own tolerance. Fabricator tolerance documents explain that the final overall thickness of an insulated unit cannot be controlled precisely, because the glass, any interlayers, and the spacers each vary. For ordering and acceptance, use the tolerance published by your supplier and compare it with your measured value.

Measuring and Identifying Coatings

Low-E coatings improve energy performance and are invisible to the eye. The Glass-Chek PRO detects them and displays whether a coating is hard coat or soft coat; EDTM identifies soft coats as sputtered, and the PRO classifies them as single, double, or triple silver. On the GC3001, the meter can locate a Low-E coating on a double-pane window from a single side and confirm a coating on surface 3, which EDTM notes does not apply to certain window types.

Matching the coating matters when replacing glass. The wrong coating can hurt energy performance and make the new unit look different from the rest of the building. In production, EDTM lists ensuring proper orientation of Low-E coatings among the applications.

Laminated Glass, Triple Pane, and Suspended Film

•         Laminated glass: the Glass-Chek PRO displays total laminated thickness. The Glass-Chek ELITE identifies the laminate and measures the inner layer, and in a special mode can identify which glass carries the Low-E coating when it is placed against the laminate inner layer.

•         Triple pane: both models measure glass, air space, and overall thickness of triple pane windows in one push.

•         Suspended film: the PRO is compatible with suspended film such as Heat Mirror.

What a Glass Thickness Gauge Can and Cannot Tell You

Question

Answer

How thick is each pane?

Yes, with a meter that reads sealed units

How wide is the air space?

Yes

How thick is the whole unit?

Yes

Is there a Low-E coating, and what type?

Yes, with Low-E capable models such as the Glass-Chek PRO and ELITE

Is the glass laminated?

The PRO shows total laminated thickness; the ELITE identifies laminate and measures the inner layer

What gas fills the air space?

No; gas fill is a separate test

Is the seal intact?

Not what a thickness meter reports

EDTM also offers the MG1500 MIG thickness gauge; see its product page for what it measures and how it fits your work. For a tool-selection framework, read the glass thickness gauge buying guide.

How to Compare Measured Values With a Specification

1.       Record each measured value: lites, air spaces, overall thickness, laminate, Low-E type and surface.

2.       Look up the specified nominal values on the order or build sheet.

3.       Check each lite against the C1036 range for its nominal size.

4.       Check overall thickness against your supplier’s published tolerance.

5.       Check the Low-E type and surface against the specification.

6.       If anything falls outside the allowed range, re-measure at the bottom center and then escalate.

Existing Windows vs. New Units

The same measurements serve two situations. On existing windows, you measure to learn what is installed and what to order. On new units, you measure to confirm that what arrived matches what was specified. The tools and the record sheet are the same, and the comparison is different: for existing windows, the goal is a complete description, and for new units, the goal is a pass-or-fail comparison with the specification and its tolerance.

Common Pitfalls

•         Treating nominal sizes as exact measurements

•         Ignoring the tolerance on overall thickness

•         Recording thickness without the Low-E type and surface

•         Assuming a thickness meter reports gas fill or seal condition

•         Measuring away from the bottom center

•         Using a tool that does not support laminated glass on a laminated job

Frequently Asked Questions

What is insulated glass measurement?

It is identifying the thickness of each pane, the air space, and the overall unit, along with coatings and laminate, in a sealed insulated glass unit.

What tolerances apply to glass thickness in an IGU?

ASTM E2190 states that glass thickness tolerance follows ASTM C1036, which sets a range for each nominal size. Overall unit thickness tolerance comes from your supplier’s published specification.

Can a glass thickness gauge detect Low-E?

Some can. The Glass-Chek PRO and ELITE detect Low-E coatings, and the PRO reports hard or soft coat and silver layers.

Why does my reading not match the nominal size?

Nominal thickness is a designation with a tolerance band, so small differences are expected.

Does a thickness meter measure argon or other gas fill?

No. Gas content is measured by separate instruments.

What is surface 3?

In a double-pane unit, it is the air-space face of the inner pane, one common location for a Low-E coating.
