GC3200 vs. GC3001: Which Glass Thickness Meter Is Right for Your Workflow?

If you are shopping for a glass thickness meter, you will find that EDTM offers two handheld models: the GC3200 Glass-Chek ELITE and the GC3001 Glass-Chek PRO. Both measure glass and air space thickness, identify Low-E coatings, and test a window from one side. So which one do you actually need?

This guide compares the two side by side, explains what each one does best, and helps you choose based on the work you do every day.

The Short Answer

•       Choose the GC3001 Glass-Chek PRO if your work is mostly standard single, double, and triple pane windows and you want a simple, dependable tool for glass replacement, installation, servicing, and inspection.

•       Choose the GC3200 Glass-Chek ELITE if you also work with laminated glass, quad pane units, bullet resistant or reflective and mirrored commercial windows, or tinted glass below 35% VLT, or if you want to save readings on the meter.

What Is a Glass Thickness Meter, and Why Do You Need One?

A glass thickness meter, also called a glass thickness gauge meter or glass thickness tester, measures the thickness of each pane of glass and the air space between panes in a window. It reads the window from one side, so you can test glass that is already installed.

The main reason to own one is ordering the right replacement. An insulated glass unit (IG unit) is made of two or more panes of glass separated by an air space. If you guess the thickness or the coating, you can end up with the wrong unit. EDTM meters take out the guesswork so you can order the correct replacement IG unit the first time.

The Low-E coating matters just as much. Using the wrong coating can negatively affect a window’s energy performance, and a coating that does not match the rest of the building can make the new window look noticeably different from its neighbors. Both meters detect Low-E coatings, tell hard coat from soft coat, and for soft coats count the silver layers (single, double, or triple), so you can match the coating you replace.

What the GC3200 and GC3001 Have in Common

Both models share the same core abilities:

•       Single, double, and triple pane glass thickness measurement

•       An expanded 2.0 inch overall thickness range

•       Compatibility with all Low-E coatings and with suspended film

•       Detection of Low-E on Surface 1 versus Surface 2, and whether a coating is present on Surface 3/4

•       Hard coat versus soft coat identification and a count of soft coat silver layers

•       Testing of residential and commercial glass from a single side

•       Screen advance control buttons, a low battery indicator, and an enhanced temperature range

•       Eight languages: English, German, French, Spanish, Dutch, Italian, Danish, and Swedish

•       Results shown to the nearest ASTM standard

GC3001 Glass-Chek PRO: Built for Everyday Glass Replacement

The GC3001 Glass-Chek PRO is a dependable glass thickness tester for installers, production staff, building inspectors, and surveyors, including people who are new to glass testing. With one button push, it tells you the exact replacement IG unit to order.

What stands out on the PRO:

•       Screen advance buttons. Move forward or back through the result screens at your own pace with the arrow keys, instead of waiting for screens to run automatically as the older GC3000 required.

•       Membrane switch front panel. The front panel is smooth, with no protruding power switch or button guard, for a sleeker and more reliable design.

•       Single-side Low-E detection. This helps in multi-story buildings where you can only reach the inside of the window. The PRO can also confirm a Low-E coating on Surface 3 (not applicable for certain window types).

•       Easy menu. Hold the arrow key to change operating modes, units of measure, languages, and screen advance speeds.

•       Flexible display formats. Choose actual values or values rounded to ASTM standards, in fractions of an inch, thousandths of an inch, decimal millimeters, and more.

•       Welcome screen reminder. A simple graphic reminds you to measure at the bottom center of the window, the most accurate and repeatable location, and the screen shows the current operating mode.

•       Improved build. A more durable LCD and a higher-precision laser give more accurate readings.

•       Portable power. It runs on a common, easily replaceable 9-volt alkaline battery.

The PRO also handles tinted glass and shows the total thickness of laminated glass, but it does not identify laminated glass or measure PVB thickness. For tinted glass below 35% VLT, you will need the GC3200.

Best for: standard residential and commercial glass replacement, field installation and servicing, production spot-checking, building inspection, and checking Low-E orientation during installation or production. EDTM also lists measuring glass deflection in sealed IG window assemblies and many automotive applications.

GC3200 Glass-Chek ELITE: For Laminated and Specialty Glass

EDTM calls the GC3200 Glass-Chek ELITE the best glass thickness gauge meter on the market, and its feature list shows why. It does everything the PRO does and adds the tools for harder jobs.

•       Laminated glass identification. It identifies laminated glass in a window and measures the thickness of the laminate inner layer. In a special operating mode, it can also identify which piece of glass has the Low-E coating when the Low-E surface is placed against the laminate inner layer.

•       Graphical display with window illustrations. The window is drawn approximately to scale, and each piece of glass and each surface is numbered. This makes the exact makeup of a window, and the Low-E coated surface, easy to understand.

•       Complete readout. The thickness display includes glass, air space, laminate, and overall thickness, and the Low-E display shows the location and type of coating.

•       Triple and quad pane testing. Measure glass, air space, laminate, and overall IG thickness of triple pane windows with a single push. The GC3200 also measures quad pane units.

•       Specialty coverage. It is compatible with bullet resistant windows, reflective and mirrored commercial windows, tinted glass below 35% VLT, and has modes for multi-laminate and suspended film.

•       Surface 3 versus Surface 4 detection. It can tell whether the coating is on Surface 3 or Surface 4.

•       Memory and backlight. Store up to 30 measurements and use the backlight display setting.

Best for: glazing contractors, inspectors, and manufacturers who regularly meet laminated, specialty, or heavily coated glass, and anyone who wants to save and review readings.

Which Glass Thickness Meter Fits Your Workflow?

Match the meter to the job you do most often:

•       Standard glass replacement: The GC3001 covers single, double, and triple pane windows and identifies the Low-E type you need to match.

•       Laminated glass: Choose the GC3200. It is the model that identifies laminated glass and measures the laminate inner layer.

•       Specialty commercial glass: For quad pane, bullet resistant, or reflective and mirrored windows, choose the GC3200.

•       Dark tinted glass: For tinted glass below 35% VLT, choose the GC3200.

•       Building inspection and record keeping: Both meters test from one side. If you want to store readings on the meter, the GC3200 holds 30 measurements.

•       Production spot-checking: The GC3001 suits standard insulated glass. If your line includes laminated or specialty products, the GC3200 covers them.

•       Training new team members: The GC3001 has a simple menu and a welcome screen that reminds users where to measure. The GC3200’s illustrated display helps users see exactly how a window is built.

Quick Decision Checklist

Answer these five questions:

1.    Will you test laminated glass? If yes, choose the GC3200.

2.    Do you work with quad pane, bullet resistant, or reflective and mirrored commercial windows? If yes, choose the GC3200.

3.    Do you test tinted glass below 35% VLT? If yes, choose the GC3200.

4.    Do you want to store measurements, or use a backlit, illustrated display? If yes, choose the GC3200.

5.    Is your work mostly standard single, double, or triple pane glass? The GC3001 covers it.

If you answered yes to any of the first four, the ELITE is the safer long-term choice. Otherwise, the PRO gives you the core measurements and Low-E identification you need.
