Tell The Whole Story Of Your Glass, Window Or Film's Performance

Other meters on the market today do not have the capability of measuring as much of the solar spectrum range as the SS2450 instrument.  These other meters give a representation of performance based upon a smaller range, which results in additional errors.  The SS2450 uses patented optics that are capable of replicating almost the entire solar spectrum through the Near Infrared region and displays this performance with six performance metrics:

  • UV Transmission
  • Visible Light Transmission
  • Infrared Transmission (900 to 1000nm)
  • Infrared Transmission (780 to 1700nm+)
  • Overall Solar Transmission
  • Damage Weight Coefficient

A Professional Sales Approach

The Solar Spectrum Transmission Meter is our most technically advanced and accurate transmission meter to date.  While it will undoubtedly be used in various labs and manufacturing facilities, it's main application will be as a sales tool.  We at EDTM believe in providing sales tools that display an honest, unbiased demonstration of your window or film's performance so the performance can speak for itself, and that's exactly what the SS2450 is designed to do.

"Re-Creating The Solar Spectrum"

By using patented technology, the SS2450 effectively re-creates the sun's solar spectrum within the meter.  The biggest shortcoming with previous instruments is that they only measured a small portion of the Infrared Transmission performance of glass or film.  These previous instruments have used a cost effective method of only showing performance in the 900 to 1000nm IR range.  While these tools have been helpful in communicating energy performance, they haven't been telling the whole story.  Using its patented technology, the Solar Spectrum Transmission Meter has greatly surpassed previous meters by displaying 780 to 1700nm+ as shown in the illustration below.  The final "bump" of energy you see on the far right hand side of the chart accounts for less than 5% of the Solar spectrum.

Most Accurate Energy Measuring Device To Date

The Visible Light Transmission (VLT) value of the SS2450 accurately represents the photopic spectrum for visible light, which is the standard used for the glass, window & film industries.  Because of its outstanding spectrum performance in visible and IR, the SS2450 also provides a very accurate Solar Transmission (UV, Visible and IR combined) value.  As a comparison, our BTU Solar Meters cover the spectrum of 300nm to 1100nm while the Solar Spectrum Transmission meter covers from 300 to 1700+nm.

Damage Weight Coefficient

A new feature included in the SS2450 is a Damage Weight Coefficient value that is specified in the ISO9050 and NFRC300 standards.  This value assigns a percentage of 0 to 100 as to the ability of a given window product to resist fading and damage from the energy of the sun.  The lower the number, the better the performance of your product.

Three Calibration Standards

The SS2450 is capable of calculating the transmission values with respect to 3 different standards: EN410(2011), ISO9050(2003), and NFRC 300(2010). The device will show results calibrated to the standard you have selected.  This optimizes the meter for worldwide use, as users are able to select the standard most relevant to their country.

Explaining Performance Measurements During A Sales Presentation

When the SS2450 is used as a window or film demonstration tool during a sales presentation, it is important for the salesperson to understand the meaning of each performance measurement and how to translate the performance into tangible benefits for the prospective buyer.

T UV(A) stands for UltraViolet (UV) Transmission.  UV energy is the primary component responsible for fading of furnishings and overall deterioration of fabric quality. The more a window product can reject or absorb the sun’s UV energy, the longer the life and quality of the furnishings are protected. All window products should strive for the lowest UV transmission value possible.  By using glass and film samples, the SS2450 allows you to demonstrate how well your product will block harmful UV energy compared to other types of glass and film.

T IR (780 - 1700nm) stands for Infrared (IR) Transmission within the 780 - 1700nm+ range.  As explained above, this range accounts for the vast majority of IR energy from the sun.  IR energy relates to the heat energy that is emitted from the sun.  Our eyes cannot see this energy, but our bodies can feel this heat when we're in the sun, and this heat also hits a window surface and transmits through the glass to increase the temperature inside the building.  The lower the number, the less heat energy is added to a building, thus reducing over-heating effects that occur in summer months and in hot climates.

T IR (900 - 1000nm) stands for IR Transmission within the 900 - 1000nm range.  We included this measurement to allow users to highlight the difference between the two different methods of measuring IR.  The 900 - 1000nm range has been commonly used in the industry because it is an extremely cost effective method for showing a glimpse of IR performance.  In fact, two of our meters use this method (SD2400 & WP4500).  Meters that only use the 900 - 1000nm range can lead to misleading performance data.  The SS2450 allows for a more complete and accurate analysis with the 780 - 1700nm option and provides the utmost in professionalism and transparency by allowing the salesperson to compare and contrast how different demonstration meters display IR performance.

T VISIBLE (Photopic) stands for Visible Light Transmission or the portion of the sun's spectrum that human eyes can see.  The SS2450 uses a new method of more accurately measuring the wavelengths that the eye can register.  Essentially, what the eye sees is what the SS2450 measures.  A window product with high visible light transmission values will result in a clearer and more natural view through the window and allow more natural light into the building.  Too much visible light, however, can result in unwanted glare - especially aggravating in rooms with televisions or computer monitors.

T SOLAR stands for Solar Transmission which includes UV, Visible and Infrared energy.  With its expanded infrared range, the SS2450, accounts for the 300 - 1700nm+ which offers a much more complete and accurate Solar Transmission measurement when compared to other portable devices on the market.

T DAMAGE WEIGHT (Tdw) represents the transmission amount for a weighted spectral range that extends over portions of the UV and Visible spectrums.  This value is used to give an estimation of the amount of fading-causing light that gets transmitted through a window.  For example, an 80% Tdw will cause more fading than a 20% Tdw.  While UV Transmission is a very good indicator of fading caused by the sun, Tdw is widely recognized as a more accurate and complete indicator of fading.  For more on Damage Weight and detailed information on the Solar Spectrum Meter, please visit the SS2450 User Manual.
